The platform behind Takealot's Personal Shopper network

We built and now run the technology layer for Takealot's Personal Shopper programme - a two-product platform serving three user groups, delivered on time and on a fixed budget.

Takealot's first outsourced product build.

The Personal Shopper app: commission estimate, sales goal, orders, tier progression and the monthly leaderboard.

The need

A working business, outgrowing its infrastructure.

Takealot needed the technology layer for an entirely new vertical. The Personal Shopper programme was already live - a growing network of 14,000+ shoppers placing orders on behalf of customers across South Africa - but it ran on spreadsheets and informal channels. The operations worked; the infrastructure couldn't keep up.

They needed a partner who could work inside their product team, translate enterprise-grade security and infrastructure constraints, and serve three very different user groups from day one - without recruiting specialist roles or coordinating multiple suppliers.

What we delivered

Two products. One connected foundation.

A Personal Shopper app and a Community Manager dashboard - sharing one authentication, one data infrastructure and one design system, integrated directly into Takealot's business systems.

Built to motivate

The parts shoppers actually feel.

Progression, recognition and momentum - the mechanics that turn a tool into something shoppers want to open every day.

Standing and recognition

The monthly leaderboard: a podium of the top three shoppers in the group, the days left in the round, and where this shopper currently sits.

Goals and progress

The suggested sales goal: October's value against target, a progress ring, and a prompt showing how far there is left to go.

The day at a glance

The shopper's home counters: orders and items assigned, plus clients, deals, events and competitions with what is new in each.

Beyond just the product

What an enterprise is actually buying.

The differentiator was never the app. It was everything around it - and it's what an enterprise product buyer is really paying for.

01

Fixed-cost, scope-bound delivery

Costed to scope, with the delivery risk carried on our side. Fixed budget, fixed timeline - Takealot knew exactly what they were getting, what it would cost and how long it would take before a line of code was written.

02

One full team, already assembled

Experience, technology, data and strategy from a single partner - no coordinating suppliers or recruiting specialists for one project. The team was proven and ready to go.

03

Embedded in Takealot's environment

We worked inside Takealot's architecture and governance - alongside their product owners, technical leads, security, compliance and design partner - and set the delivery cadence the programme ran to. An extension of the internal team, held to the same standards.

04

Managed service, build into run

The team that built it runs it. No handoff, no knowledge transfer, no rebuilding context - the product context stays intact as the programme grows.

The impact

Delivered on time, on budget - and still running.

Strategy, product development and build ran as one stream alongside Takealot's product function, which meant the handover that usually costs a project its momentum never had to happen. We hit the date and the budget, moved from pilot straight into full operations, and the people fixing and iterating today are the ones who made the original calls, so nothing has ever needed explaining to a new team.

  1. Strategy

Shaping the product alongside the business.

  2. Product development

Design and build as one embedded stream.

  3. Build

Two products, one fixed budget and timeline.

  4. Pilot support

Into the hands of the first shoppers.

  5. Operations

Live - and run by the team that built it.

By the numbers

We are glad to have found a partner that understands the market; contextualises technology to South African problems; talks the language that we talk and moves at the speed at which we move. That has been the win-win recipe for us.
